International Workers’ Day is a celebration of the international labour movement. May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and celebrated unofficially in many other countries. It has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist and anarchist groups commemorating the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago.
In Romania this day was first celebrated in 1890 by the socialist movement. During the communist regime, the authorities organized protests May 1 huge boulevards. Columns people, held celebrations, chanting slogans and carried placards.
